There is a difference between your avatar and your profile photo. The avatar is displayed when you post in the forum. And your profile picture is displayed in your profile or when you add pics to the gallery. That's why you will see your avatar only when you make a post in the forum. If you want to know which avatar you have chosen, you can see it in My Settings -> Profile -> Change Avatar.
